Global Humanities_Syllabus
Major units
- Classical Epistemologies: what is knowledge, how we know what we know
- Power, and the Making of the Modern World: unequal reshaping of social and political boundaries in the age of nation building, colonization
- Writing a New World: considered the world we have built and are continuing to build, and how to do better moving forward
Learning Outcomes
- Reading Skills: Develop skills in reading texts, including the ability to: read texts critically, charitably, and with awareness of historical context โ how do we read academically ?
- Writing Skills: Develop skills in academic writing such as: writing a successful thesis statement, structuring an essay with an introduction, body, and conclusion, and using relevant textual evidence to support oneโs arguments in the form of quotes.
- Oral Communication Skills: Develop oral communication skills including: active listening, articulation and justification of oneโs ideas.
- Cultivating an appreciation for intellectual exploration, intellectual community, and applying diverse ideas to oneโs own life
Attention
- All written assignments must be typed, double-spaced, with one-inch margins, and size 12 Times or Times New Roman font.
- Save all documents as .doc or .docx. (I will not accept documents saved in other formats, i.eย NO PDFs!!!).

Course assignments
- Professionalization (20%):ย Attendance, reading, and participation are all key to learning in this course
โ each unexcused absence decrease 10% in professionalization (4-10%, 5-20%, 6 or more-failure)
- Unit Essays (70%):ย Students will have to complete three major writing assignments. These will be discussed in more detail in class
- Unit 1 (15%): 22 Sep
- Unit 2 (25%): 3 Nov
- Unit 3 (30%): 15 Dec
- Reading Journals (10%):ย ****For almost every week of reading, students will need to complete a reading journal (due by 9 amย ****on the due date, due dates are below). You must write at least one page per reading. โ talk more about it in Thursday (22.8)
